Learn to make wine at home

Have you ever thought about making your own wine? With knowledge of the proper ingredients and procedures, you can make your own “house wine” from local grapes and other fruits.

On Thursday, April 14, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Patrick Pierquet, Enology Assistant in the wine lab at the OARDC, will offer “Home Winemaking Basics” at Local Roots Market. The class will introduce participants to the principles and best practices for making wine at home, including techniques for making wines from Ohio grapes and other fruits.

Pierquet will demonstrate a selection of winemaking equipment but will also provide a helpful list of places to purchase such equipment, books, and websites. The class will include plenty of time for questions.

Pierquet received his master’s in Fruit Science from the University of Minnesota and spent time researching the local populations of the wild grape, Vitis riparia, before propagating cold-hardy wine grapes from local stock. He set up the first experimental winery at the university, and his research contributed to the development of the Frontenac grape variety. At the OARDC, he makes experimental wines, analyzes wines from commercial wineries, and helps run wine competitions.

There is no limit to the class size, but there will be a fee of $3 for Local Roots members and $5 for non-members, payable at the door.

As a year-round market for locally-produced foods and other agricultural products, Local Roots Market is located at 140 S. Walnut St. in Wooster. The market is open Wednesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Membership is not required to shop.
