Doing some serious sight seeing on my treadmill

Human legs

Oh the things you can see when you put one foot in front of the other.

The quest for 1,000 miles is well under way, and I am happy to say that after three months, I currently stand at 301.2 miles, well ahead of my pace to gobble up 1,000 miles in 2011. That’s 3.24 miles per day, which will hopefully go up when summer rolls around.

Meanwhile, my wife has taken up the quest as well, but as an avid walker, she has already pounded out an amazing 452.1 miles, which averages out to a nifty 4.86 miles per day... and just wait until school gets out and she really gets excited about her hobby! Ten miles a day is nothing for her, and I am trying to convince her to walk a marathon in one day.

OK, with the first three months in the books, and 1,000 miles well within sight, we have recalculated our destinations. I am now aiming to reach Denver, Colo. for a little ski vacation come Jan. 1. That means a total of 1,216 miles of walking. Ann has the ultimate goal of trekking across country to sunny San Diego, Calif., an eye-popping 2,013 miles as the crow flies. In order to pull that off, she has to average 5.90 miles per day, a tall order, but one which I firmly believe she can handle. She believes that if she does make it, she deserves to lounge on the sunny West Coast beaches. I can’t argue. I will have to average 3.41 miles to make Denver by the New Year.

All right, how about a little navigation fun.

I love baseball, so along my trek, I currently have enough miles that I could have seen home games for the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals. Next up on the list: Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia Phillies.

In addition, I could have done plenty of sight-seeing along the way, exploring the nation’s capital’s many monuments, gone to Gettysburg, taken in the breathtaking sights at Niagara Falls and talked in person to Touchdown Jesus. Next up in short order will be a visit to both the White Sox and Cubbies home parks in Chicago, where I may just have to get some world-famous pizza.

Ann, on the other hand, could have branched out to explore much of the East Coast and Midwest. Her stops would have included the arch in St. Louis, a walk down Tobacco Road near Charlotte, a trip to play the one-armed bandits at Atlantic City, a visit to the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, a tour of the Big Apple, where I am sure she would want to stop in and say hello to Matt and Meredith on the Today Show and walked to the top of the Statue of Liberty, and, as a big reward for her hard work, a day or two on the beach lounging on the lovely white sands of Virginia Beach.

Boy, little did we know that there were so many sights to be seen and places to enjoy, simply by walking!

If you’re out there walking with us, stay in touch and keep on trucking.
