According to Jenkins-Meyer, she chose Sleeping Beauty for several reasons. She said, “It is a classic fairy tale that all ages enjoy. There is great music and a wonderful opportunity for a variety of parts for our dances. One of my primary goals is to create challenging roles for our dancers.
“Because the choreography is new, I have drawn inspirations from my dancers and they, in turn, have made it their own.”
The story of the ballet tells the tale of the beautiful Princess Aurora and the spell cast upon her that put her to sleep for 100 years. She can only wake by the kiss of a handsome prince. Fortunately for all, such a prince is waiting in the wings and as they say, everyone lives happily ever after.
Featured performers are Tricia Stefancin as Princess Aurora, Ethan Ralston as Prince Florimund, Richard Benson as King Florestan, Stephanie Sustar as the Queen, Miriam King as Lilac Fairy, Olivia Mann as the Fairy of Beauty, Tia Fry as the Fairy of Grace, and Lindsey Johnston as Carabosse.
Also highlighted are Erin McClintock as Blue Bird, Abby Cannon as Fire Bird, Emily Neill as Puss-in-Boots, Emile Raber as White Cat, Charlotte King as Little Red Riding Hood, and Samantha Murphy as The Gray Wolf.
Performing as fairies are Meredith Bruch, Abby Cannon, Madeline Fannin, Karien Graf, Charlotte King, Erin McClintock, Samantha Murphy, Emma Shehy, and Elise Weiland. Carabosse’s minions will be Emily Neill and Emilie Raber, The maidens will be Lauren Balint, Elizabeth Boros, Zelie McLain, Maggie Schlabach, Jamie Shoots. The Countesses are Sarah Boreman, Lydia DeVincent, Gillian Fannin, Alexa Mitchell, McKailla Parsons, Alexandra Raber, Emma Strong, Jennifer Vicknair, Jillian Vicknair, and Abigail Werstler.
Dancing as Forest Nymphs are Abby Cannon, Madeline Fannin, Tia Fry, Charlotte King, Olivia Mann, Erin McClintock, Samantha Murphy, Emma Shehy. The Royal Guests are Lauren Balint, Meredith Bruch, Madeline Fannin, Karien Graf, Emma Shehy, and Elise Weiland. Wedding Attendants are Hannah Chinn, Kayla Daugherty, Sara Daugherty, Esther Hart, Hope Kennedy, Anna Qu, Sarah Shoots, Nina Schultz, Mia Smith, and Anneliese Wagoner
The other dances in a variety of styles will be presented at this year’s performance. They include Volees d’oiseaux with choreography by Stephanie Musselman to the music of Claude Bolling; Dominion, featuring choreography by Tricia Jenkins-Meyer to the music of Black Violin; Possession with choreography by Stephanie Sustar, created for music by Daft Punk; Everything, highlighting the choreography of and a solo performance by Ethan Ralston and music by Lifehouse; and a popular favorite Can-Can Variation with the choreography of Wayne Center Artistic Director Emeritus Brenda Klingbeil Schwinn.
Performances are scheduled for Saturday, April 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 17 at 2 p.m. at the Wooster High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $12 for adults, $9 for seniors (60 and over), and $7 for children (12 and under). Wayne Center members are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and $5 for children.
