Eleven seniors and 21 juniors were inducted into the Marie Chenevey Chapter of the National Honor Society at the Wayne County Schools Career Center recently. They join 16 senior members inducted last year, for a total of 48 members.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Andrew Woodward and invocation by Robert Marty, principal Paul Brockett welcomed the students, their families and friends. “Many ceremonies this time of year celebrate past accomplishments,” said Brockett. “We are recognizing these students who have identified themselves as leaders in the way they have chosen to live their lives. Their outstanding personal characteristics have proven to improve themselves and those around them. They have a lifetime commitment to those ideas, and those principles will continue to guide their lives.”

NHS adviser Michelle Bower introduced the faculty council who helped choose the members: Jim Harlan, Andy Nicholson, Shelly Perry, Amy Tietz and Bruce Woodruff. Harlan, the past advisor, was thanked specifically for his record keeping skills. Bower also thanked the parents and teachers for their countless hours of tutoring and support.

The NHS student leadership team included president Kaitlin Sanderfer, Robin Bryant, Amanda Rohr and Kiersten Stoller. After they lit a candle from the center candle, representing the eternal light of knowledge, each of them presented one of the four qualities that identify a NHS member: scholarship, service, leadership and character.

“Education ends only with life,” Rohr said.

“We are volunteering our time and abilities to the creation of a better tomorrow,” said Bryant.

“The price of leadership is sacrifice,” said Sanderfer.

“The force of character guides one through life, daily striving to make the right choice,” said Stoller.

Each new inductee received a membership card, certificate and pin. Seniors also received NHS cords to wear at graduation ceremonies. Presenting the awards were guidance counselor Cheryl Koehler, Harlan, and extra help coordinator Jill Parker.

Dr. Kip Crain led the students in the NHS pledge.

Bower closed the ceremony with a poem called Hold High the Torch by an unknown author: “Hold high the torch; you did not light its glow, ‘twas given you by other hands, you know; ‘tis yours to keep it burning bright; yours to pass on... for there are other feet that we must guide.”

A reception with cookies and punch followed the ceremony.
