Now in its 16th year, the Great Lakes Fiber Show will be held May 28 and 29 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds, 199 Vanover St., Wooster. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Vendors will be selling raw and processed fiber from sheep, alpacas, llamas, angora goats, and angora rabbits. They will have equipment from spinning wheels to knitting needles, crochet hooks, and felting needles for the fiber enthusiast. Some vendors will also have finished items.

Four buildings will be filled with vendors as well as additional vendors outside. Outside vendors will display alpacas and angora rabbits along with their products for sale. Linda Reichert, the show organizer, said this is the biggest show yet with 90 vendors. A few new vendors with unique items have been added this year. Some vendors are coming from as far away as Wisconsin and South Carolina.

Sheep owners have made entries in the Wool Fleece Show and Sale. The fleeces will be judged and then offered for sale. This is a chance to purchase raw wool to be made into batts for comforts, roving for spinning, and yarn for knitting, crocheting, weaving and other projects. Several fiber processors will be available to take fiber back to their mills to be processed.

The Skein Competition is for the handspinner who wants to see how their spinning compares to others and to learn what they might do to improve. Attendees will want to check this out.

Just for fun activities will take place both days in the industrial building. These activities were originally planned with kids in mind, but adults may participate too. On Saturday morning, Pat Catan’s Craft Center of Wooster will have supplies to make a drop spindle. Then Mindy Albright will teach how to use it to spin wool. Afternoon activities include finger crochet, knitting without needles, making a small wool angel, and spindle plying. On Sunday morning, make a braided bracelet and try spindle spinning. In the afternoon, make a beaded woven key ring. Pat Catan’s will offer kids crafts both days. These activities are ongoing and free.

Workshops will be going on both days, but they required preregistration. For anyone who missed out on the workshops this year, request to be on the mailing list for next year. Reichert also welcomes workshop suggestions. More information is available at the website at http://www.greatlakesfibershow.com or by phone 330-264-9665

In addition to the fiber show, the Great Lakes Sheep Show and Sale will also take place at the fairgrounds. For information about the sheep show, contact The Banner Sheep Magazine at 309-785-5058 or visit http://www.bannersheepmagazine.com.

Admission to the fairgrounds is free. Food, including roast lamb sandwiches, will be available on the fairgrounds.
