Jacob, Joseph, George, and Daniel were killed in this terrible conflict. Daniel wrote home describing the battle of Rich Mountain, “We marched through a pathless wood obstructed by thick laurel, fallen timber, and rocks. At noon we came upon Confederate pickets and immediately opened the action. The rebels retreated and we took possession of this strategic mountain.”
