But perhaps the best part about the surprise was that it truly was a shock for Day, whose mother secretly entered her into the contest.
“I had no idea,” she said. “(Mom) entered for herself and she thought she would enter for me too. We’re doing a lot of work on our house. We’ve done a lot on the inside, but not necessarily on the outside.”
Day, along with her husband, Aaron, who is a mason by profession, and a dog named Brick, moved into a house built in the ‘60s six years ago, after being engaged for two years. Both Laura and Aaron Day are West Holmes High School graduates.
Once moved in, the Days quickly began making home repairs, including completely redoing their chimney, installing new hardwood floors, fixing a dilapidated back stoop and watching as the electric company recently removed a large Sweet Gum from their front yard. Day explained that she was looking forward to filling in the front yard, now that there was a large hole without the tree.
“When we first bought the house, I went out and bought just a couple of plants because we didn’t have a whole lot of money and I wasn’t sure what was going to pop up around the house,” Day said. “But we really haven’t bought anything, we’ve just transplanted and moved things around.”
Day’s husband particularly enjoys the outside work and she explained that when he found out they had won the money to landscape any way they wanted, he just kept walking around the yard, not saying much, but thinking about what was to come.
The couple is looking forward to completing more home projects together this summer, especially with their newly acquired Around The House winnings from GPI. Day explained that the time the two spend together, accomplishing goals and just having fun, has truly been a blessing.
“You’ll never have the time where it’s just you and your husband, so we’ve had a lot of fun the last few years. We’re going to have a lot of fun with this too.”
A new contest from GPI will be advertised in the paper and online soon, so keep checking back for more great giveaways as we enter into the summer months.
