Joseph was born July 4, 1946, in Holmes County, to the late Willard J. and Eileen C. Patterson. In 1964, he graduated from the last class at Killbuck High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had worked for many years at Morton Buildings and retired as the Holmes County Dog Warden in 2008 after 13 years of service. He was a member of the Killbuck VFW, the Ohio County Dog Wardens Association, and was a life member of the North American Hunt Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed deer and mushroom hunting and fishing.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda Lou Patterson, whom he married August 25, 1967; children, James (Rose) Patterson, Brian (Jodi) Patterson, and Ryan (Tracie) Patterson, all of Millersburg, and Maria Patterson (fiance, Scott Arnholt) of Loudonville; six grandchildren, Tessa (Jac) Neville, Tara Patterson, Ashley Patterson, James Rose, Joey Rose, and Taylor Patterson; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon Mackey and Grant Raber; brothers, Jim (Kathleen) Patterson of Killbuck, Dick (Sandy) Patterson of Millersburg, and Ed (Deb) Patterson of Killbuck; a special niece, Sheila Patterson Bickel; mother-in-law, Dora Tharp Schuch of Wooster; sisters-in-law, Mary (Robert) Marrero and Becky (Hal) Roudebush, both of Wooster; brother-in-law, Carl (Jean) Tharp of Fredericksburg; a special Army friend, Rick Reid of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by his dog, Gus.
He was preceded in death by an infant sister; his father-in-law, Lewis W. Tharp; and a nephew, Rodney Moniger.

Graveside services will be held June 16, at 11 a.m., in Prairie Township Cemetery, Holmesville, with Pastor Mike Rogers officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Killbuck VFW. Friends may call June 15, from 4-8 p.m., at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg.
