Mary Shutt

Mary K. Shutt, 77, of Orrville, formerly of Dover, died June 16, 2011, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

Mary was born June 30, 1933, in Glenville, W.Va., to Roy and Alma Waggy. She graduated from Tanner (W.Va.) High School in 1951. Upon graduation, she moved in with an aunt in Winfield. She worked in the office of Garver Brothers, Strasburg, and attended Winfield United Methodist Church, where she joined the choir. She married Dale Shutt on July 27, 1952, and they spent their earlier years in the Dover-Winfield area. After their children were in school, Mary became a dental assistant to Dr. Deetz. She was also a member of the Winfield Grange and later volunteered as the church secretary.

Mary was an expert seamstress, having made many of her children’s clothes. She earned many blue ribbons at the county fair with her sewing and pie baking.

After the children left home and Dale was transferred to the Orrville Post Office, they joined Orrville Christian Church, where Mary became active in the choir and became a full-time secretary of the church, a position she held for 20 years. She also served on the hospitality committee, the women’s sewing committee, worked with the VBS, and made custom teddy bears. After retiring, she was re-hired as a part-time secretary.

Besides making custom bears, Mary enjoyed planting and caring for flowers. She would always take trimmings and try to root them in the house over winter, and then plant them around the house the next summer.

Mary is survived by her husband of 58 years; children, twins Patricia Welsh of Medina and Pam (David) Schehl of Fredericktown, Steve (Pam) Shutt of Dover, and Cherie (Steve) Cordts of River Edge, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marjory (Steve) Lewellen of Morgantown, W.Va., and Marlyn (Duane) Law of Dover; and 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Kurtz.

Services were held June 19, at Orrville Christian Church, with Rev. Tom Ledford officiating. Interment will take place in Union Hill Cemetery, Sugarcreek, at the family’s convenience.
