Drug charge fugitives back in court

Holmes County Common Pleas saw two fugitives from justice returned to its courtroom June 7 and 8.

Jesse J. Baker, 46, of 3585 Ely Road, Wooster, was picked up in Illinois on a warrant for failure to appear and is now charged with a fourth-degree felony in addition to illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of methamphetamine and possession of weapons under disability. He previously pleaded to the drug charges and failed to show up at his March 7 sentencing hearing.

James L. Sheaffer, 40, of 9877 County Road 30, Killbuck, was arrested by bail bondsmen at his residence after his bond was revoked for failing to appear at his June 8 sentencing hearing. Sheaffer pleaded May 3 to trafficking in morphine and trafficking in methylphenidate within the vicinity of a juvenile. His attorney, Christina Smith, said she will file a motion to withdraw Sheaffer’s plea.

Prosecuting Attorney Steve Knowling said Baker was picked up by Illinois law enforcement. He was presumably working in a carnival when arrested, Knowling said.

Holmes County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to locate Sheaffer at the County Road 30 residence several times, Knowling said, but Sheaffer was not at home.

Baker is being held on a $50,000 cash bond. Sheaffer is being held without bond and Knowling said he may file failure to appear charges.

The charges against Baker stem from Oct. 26, 2010, when Holmes County Sheriff’s deputies and Medway Drug Enforcement Agency agents raided a property off Township Road 212. Chemicals to manufacture meth, trash associated with the production of meth and a loaded .22 caliber rifle were found in a camper owned by Baker that was also located on the property.

The charges against Sheaffer stem from March 25, 2010 and April 1, 2010, when he allegedly sold drugs to a confidential informant working with the Holmes County Sheriff’s narcotics unit.

An August 22 jury trial is scheduled to hear the charges against Sheaffer. The failure to appear charge against Baker is a fourth-degree felony and carries up to 18 months in prison.
