Fighting hunger in Wayne County one Empty Bowl at a time

Nancy Webb and MacKenzie Haiss remove some of the more than 200 hand crafted soup bowls from the kilns at the Wayne Center for the Arts in preparation for Empty Bowls. Through the event, which is scheduled for Oct. 8 at Wayne Presbyterian Church, the organizers hope to raise $4,000 to fight hunger in Wayne County.

The Wayne Center for the Arts and the Wayne Presbyterian Church are teaming up to fight hunger in Wayne County through a unique event known as Empty Bowls.

According to one of the event’s organizers, MacKenzie Haiss, the community is invited to join in the fight to end hunger in Wayne County by attending a soup dinner at the Wayne Presbyterian Church, at 5 p.m., Oct. 8.

Those who attend the event will select one of more than 200 unique handcrafted bowls thrown and glazed by potters from the Wayne Center for the Arts using clay and glazes donated by MacKenzie’s Silver and Gold.

During the evening guests will be invited to choose from three homemade soups and a variety of desserts being donated and prepared by members of the Wayne Presbyterian Church. Fresh bread donated by Muddy Waters Café and beverages donated by Bowman Beverage will also be available.

Advance tickets for the event are required and seating is limited to 200.

Tickets will be available Sept. 25 at Wayne Presbyterian Church, with any remaining tickets available at Buehler’s Milltown beginning Sept. 26 until the event is sold out.

Haiss said the goal is to raise $4,000 for food banks and food kitchens throughout Wayne County.

Wayne Presbyterian Church is located at 7152 Burbank Road, three miles north of Wooster on state Route 83.
