Another successful year for Friends & Neighbors of EWH golf outing

The hills were alive with the sound of laughter from the more than 150 participants who came out in support of a very worthy cause, as well to have a great time with their fellow golfers. The Mohican Hills, that is...

The Friends and Neighbors of Every Woman's House annual golf scramble took place Thursday and Friday, August 11 and 12, at one of the area's most beautiful golf courses, Mohican Hills in Jeromesville.

One of the many reasons this event is so unique is that it takes place over the course of two days, thus allowing for both a women's day and a men's day. "The event is one of the few scramble tournaments in the state that caters exclusively to women golfers," said event co-chair, Mary Schantz. "Women from all skill levels participate and it offers a fun, relaxed pace of play." This year marked the 20th anniversary for the women's scramble and the men played for the 16th year in a row.

Each year, the event raises funds to benefit Every Woman's House and its programs which are so vital to the community such as a 24-hour emergency shelter, victims' assistance, and counseling, educational and medical services. Every Woman's House has seen an increase in services provided, stressing the importance of this organization and all they do for the members of this community.

Event co-chairs, Luke Palmer and Mary Schantz were both pleased with the scramble's outcome, having raised almost $15,000 and providing two fun-filled days of golf for its participants. "Thanks to ideal weather conditions, dedicated participants, generous corporate sponsors and our committed team of volunteers, the event was once again a success" stated Palmer. "The funds raised will be put to a worthy cause, and after all, that's what it's really all about."

Many of the golfers commented that this outing is one of the only ones around to provide such great perks for its participants, some of which are the delicious breakfasts and lunches, goodie bags, and the abundance of fantastic prizes for proximity event winners. "Each year, we raffle off a couple of donated items, which has always drawn a lot of interest both days," Palmer explained. "This year, in addition to the raffles, we also offered a putting contest where golfers could win tickets for a separate raffle prize if they could sink a putt."

In addition to the great prize baskets that the volunteers put together, there were several very special, golf-themed prizes handed out this year such as signed photos, shoes, flags and gloves from some of the top golfers on the pro circuit including Luke Donald, Anthony Kim, Paula Creamer and Michelle Wie.

"We would like to thank this year's participants, sponsors, volunteers and the always helpful and generous staff at Mohican Hills for helping to make this year's outing a success," noted Palmer.

The winning teams for the 2011 Friends and Neighbors of Every Woman's House Golf Scramble are as follows:

Women's Day – Team 15A – Ruth Schlabach, Lisa Campanell Komara, Carol Miller and Lillis Troyer

Men's Day (A-Flight) - Team 9A – Chris Pycraft, Darin Campbell, John Schaeffer, and Dan Plumly

Men's Day (B-Flight) - Team 16A - Ken Alexander, Gordon Collins, Levi Hershberger and John Crouch

The 2012 scramble is scheduled to take place Thursday (Women's) and Friday (Men's), August 9 and 10, once again at the beautiful Mohican Hills Golf Course. "We are looking forward to another great event in 2012," said Schantz, who is also co-chairing next year's outing. "We will be reaching out to golfers in the coming months to remind them to mark their calendars and our committee will soon be hard at work planning another great fundraiser."
