The University of Akron’s China Week, sponsored by the Confucius Institute, is an invitation to explore China’s culture, politics, economics, history, philosophy, language, martial arts and cuisine and runs Oct. 10-17 with numerous events happening throughout the downtown campus and, for the first time, extending to Wayne College via live stream broadcast.

The University of Akron’s Confucius Institute is part of an international network, supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education, dedicated to enhancing the understanding of Chinese language and culture around the world. It promotes the expansion of Chinese language instruction through a range of educational and outreach activities for students, teachers, businesses and community members.

Wayne College will broadcast several China Week speakers from the main campus to the distance learning lab at Wayne. These free presentations are open to the public and include:

- Monday, Oct. 10, from 7-8:30 p.m. Dr. Michael Sheng, The University of Akron: China and the U.S.: Past, Present and Future

- Wednesday, Oct. 12, from 7-8:30 p.m. Edward Friedman, University of Wisconsin: China’s Domestic Politics

- Thursday, Oct. 13, from 9:15-10:30 a.m. Dr. Paul Weinstein, The University of Akron Wayne College: They Took Our Jobs: A Short History of the Chinese in America.

Dr. Weinstein, professor of history at Wayne College, is the first UA professor to teach a full semester course at Henan University, the University’s Confucius Institute sponsor, which included American popular culture, western civilization, and western philosophy to Henan University students in China.

Weinstein has long promoted overseas travel as an education experience. He began organizing tours shortly after coming to Wayne in 1992. Under the name PackLite Travels, he has escorted groups to 23 countries on four continents. The majority of the tours have focused on history and culture, but some have been adventure trips with activities such as an African safari, whitewater rafting in Costa Rica and Ecuador and hiking to the lost city of Machu Picchu in Peru.
