The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program encourages eligible taxpayers to claim their Earned Income Tax Credit, designed to help hard-working individuals and families become more financially stable by offsetting taxes, supplementing low wages and providing a work incentive. Volunteers are trained using IRS materials regarding the EITC guidelines and work to get the highest returns available for residents.
To qualify for the EITC and free tax preparation services, you must have earned less than $13,660 (no children), $36,052 (one child), $40,964 (two children) or $43,998 (three or more children) in tax year 2011. Income levels increase if married. Appointments required. More information is available by calling 2-1-1.
For questions, or to schedule an appointment to have your taxes prepared, call United Way’s 2-1-1. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites will be operational from Jan. 26 through Feb. 28. Dates and times vary by location. More information is available at http://www.uwwayneholmes.org/vita.php.
