Donald Chewning

Donald L. “Don” Chewning, 69, of New Philadelphia, died Jan. 15, 2012, at his home, following a long battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 25, 1942, in Elkins, W.Va., Don was a son of the late French and Virginia Chewning. He attended school in West Virginia and moved to Tuscarawas County in the mid-1960s. He owned and operated Green Ridge Auto Body, New Philadelphia.

Don loved playing pocket billiards and did so every chance he could get. He was a member of the Tavern League, playing throughout Tuscarawas County, and was awarded many trophies during his lifetime.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Chewning, whom he married March 20, 1999; daughters, Star Blackburn (companion, Kevin Blackstone) of Sebastian, Fla., Donna (David) Knipp and Debbie (Grafton) Jenkins, both of Baltimore, Md., Rachel Elliott of Minneapolis, Minn., Kastava Ledger of East Sparta, and Sherri (Christopher) Vogel of New Philadelphia; son, Wilbert Brink (companion, Karla Miller) of Dover; 19 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Glenda (Jerry) Bennett of Winesburg, Sandy Polly of Wilmot, Sharon Boggs of Youngstown, and Barbara (Jess) Schultz of Mt. Eaton; brother, Teddy (Mary) Chewning of Wilmot; a half-sister and half-brother; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; a twin brother; a sister; two half-sisters; and a half-brother.

Services will be held Jan. 19, at 11 a.m., at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, with Pastor Don Snow officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens, Dover. Following the committal, there will be a luncheon at Calvary Baptist Church. Family and friends are invited to call Jan. 18, from 5-8 p.m.
