‘The Power of Community’ film showing and discussion

At a time when global crises can seem overwhelming, working both to promote and to achieve positive changes at the local level can help people feel more hopeful about the future.

That’s the message behind the film “The Power of Community,” which will be shown at no charge to the public on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County, 3186 Burbank Rd., Wooster. This inspiring documentary explores the situation in Cuba following the fall of the Soviet Union, when fuel and food shortages crippled the country, and shows how neighbors worked together to grow their own food and find local solutions to their crisis.

The film is presented by Wooster Area Transition, a newly developing group dedicated to promoting resilience and local solutions to community needs in Wooster and neighboring areas. Inspired by the global Transition movement – a positive, community-based response to global climate, energy, and economic crises – Wooster Area Transition welcomes everyone who is interested in building on the successful community efforts already in place so that we can find creative local solutions to these global crises.

The film will be followed by discussion, ideas for future Wooster Area Transition projects, and a dessert potluck. There is no charge for the event, but people are encouraged to bring a dessert to share.
