The College of Wooster’s Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will perform Friday, Feb. 10, at 7:30 p.m., at the McGaw Chapel, 340 E. University St.

The ensemble, under the direction of Jeffrey Lindberg, professor of music, will be joined by trombone soloist and composer/arranger Tom Garling. When he was 20 years old, Garling joined the last touring band of the late Buddy Rich, who said, “Tom Garling is going to have a very, very strong future in jazz.” Garling went on to spend the next 25 years fulfilling his mentor’s promise, appearing with such greats as Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, and Chick Corea. He was a member of the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band and toured with Maynard as musical director and trombonist for six years. A sought after arranger and composer, Garling’s talents have been used by Ferguson, Liza Minnelli, Tito Puente, and by college and high school bands throughout the country.

The evening’s program includes Dancing Men by John LaBarbera, Fireshaker by Maynard Ferguson, Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most by Tommy Wolf, Fauncy Meeting You by Neal Hefti, Makin’ Whoopee! by Eddie Cantor, and Take The “A” Train by Billy Strayhorn.

Trumpeter Ray Sasaki, who was originally scheduled to appear on this concert, cancelled because of health reasons.

Tickets are available at Buehler’s, The Wooster Book Company, and the Lowry Center Wilson Bookstore on campus. Tickets are complimentary for College of Wooster students, faculty and staff.
