Twelve seniors and 19 juniors joined 20 seniors inducted last year as members of the prestigious association. Seniors Brady Maurer of Wooster and Samantha Schmale of Orrville led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Schmale gave the invocation.
“We are recognizing students who have identified themselves as leaders,” principal Paul Brockett said. “We celebrate their many future successes. They have outstanding personal characteristics, and a desire to improve themselves and those around them. They have followed the principles of the National Honor Society, and those principles will continue to guide their futures.”
Samantha Steiner, of Smithville, recognized members of the faculty council who chose students for the honor: Jim Harlan, Martha Miller-Plumb, Shelly Perry, Helena Ritchey, and Bruce Steiner. Brandon Woodward, of Smithville, thanked the parents and teachers who have supported the students throughout their school years.
Members of the NHS leadership team presented the four characteristics common to all NHS members: scholarship, Mary Tieche of Smithville; service, Kendra Jett of Chippewa; leadership, Schmale; and character, Audrey Forrer of Dalton.
Guidance counselor Cheryl Koehler, Ritchey, Beth Gagnon and Steiner presented the juniors with their certificates, membership cards and a blue or yellow carnation. Newly-inducted seniors received their certificates, membership cards, flowers and their honor cords to wear at graduation and at the Senior Recognition Ceremony May 22 at Wayne College, and seniors inducted last year received flowers and their honor cords.
“This is an amazing group of students,” Bower said. She congratulated the students for not just getting good grades, but also being well-rounded students, “someone others can look up to.” Lynn Moomaw, director of operations, led the new members in the National Honor Society pledge, and to conclude the ceremony, Forrer sang Leave a Legacy.
