Representatives attended from Shady Lawn Health Care Community in Dalton, Magnolia Care and Rehabilitation Center in Wadsworth, Sprenger Health Care Systems in Wooster, West View Manor in Wooster, Pleasant View Health Care Center in Barberton, Sycamore Run Nursing and Rehab Center in Millersburg, Scenic Pointe Nursing and Rehab Center in Millersburg, Greenfield Independent and Assisted Living in Millersburg, Fairview Adult Group Home of Millersburg, Hospice and Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County, and Ida Sue School of Wooster. They spent time with the nursing students, providing information about their facilities. The students have clinical experiences at many of the sites, but this gave them the opportunity to chat with staff members who hire nurses and STNAs.
Practical Nursing Coordinator Jackie Shrock said the hour-long event was held so that nursing students could meet nursing staff and fill out employment applications. Facility representatives outlined what they are looking for in a nurse, and whether they prefer hiring experienced nurses or those fresh out of school. Hospice, for example, requires two years of experience since the nurses go into the homes of their clients.
Cindy Taylor and Vera Fryer of Sycamore Run said they were hoping to recruit nurses. Karen Cletzer, interim director of nursing and staff member Tina Pellshaw represented Sprenger Retirement Centers, which provide a clinical site as well as leadership for nursing students in the last quarter of their education. The leadership segment includes working with charge nurses for six to eight weeks, learning how to handle various situations, supervision and passing medications.
Applications are now being accepted for an evening adult practical nursing program beginning on Feb. 18, 2013. The application deadline for the 17-month program is Sep. 21. Those with a current STNA will attend the program for 15 months.
