Murder trial begins Monday

Lashaun Reed

A Wooster man faces aggravated murder charges in a trial that starts Monday, August 6.

Lashaun Reed, 23, of 716 Quinby Avenue, Apt. D, will face charges of aggravated murder and murder in a jury trial in Wayne County Common Pleas Court.

Reed is charged with fatally shooting 21-year-old Clifford Johnson Dec. 10, 2011. The shooting occurred when Reed and two other men approached Johnson and briefly exchanged words. According to prosecutors, Reed shot Johnson once in the back. Johnson died from the gunshot wound several hours later at Wooster Community Hospital.

The trial will be heard in Wayne County Common Pleas Judge Corey Spitler’s courtroom. The trial will begin with jury selection Monday morning, followed by presentation of the state’s case. It is not known if Reed, who is represented by attorney John Johnson Jr., will take the witness stand.

Reed fled the area sometime after the shooting and was arrested Jan. 24 in Greenville, Mississippi.

The witness list for the case is lengthy and includes a 40-year-old Wooster woman from whom Reed allegedly procured the handgun that was used to shoot Johnson. Evidence that may be presented at trial includes a 9-mm handgun, taxi service records, a motel room rental card and an unspecified amount of crack cocaine. Police have stated that drugs may have been a contributing factor in the shooting.

The Wooster Weekly News will feature stories on the trial daily beginning August 7 on its website, www.WoosterWeek lyNews.com.
