“We have 26 girls out and five of our top seven runners are returning,” said Reynolds. “We have six returning letter winners and I’d say two-thirds of our team are veterans. We put it out there … we’re going to try to go for the league title and get a team to Regionals and we’re going to use our (regular season) meets to try and do that.”
Paced by sophomore Lauren Miller’s fifth-place effort last year, the Generals were third behind Lexington and Ashland in the OCC championships on a miserable day weather-wise. Miller will again be part of a veteran crew that will look to push the Generals into contention for the league crown. Wooster’s six letter winners, which include two seniors and four juniors, have lettered every season while wearing the blue and gold.
Those two seniors are Kaitlyn Aukerman and Jackie White, who will be joined by juniors Miller, Vicki Anderson, Rebecca Kreuzman and Hannah Doan. Aukerman’s best time a year ago was a 21:26 at the Wayne-Holmes meet and White posted a 22:16. Miller went 20:57 on a difficult Malone course at the District championships, while Anderson (21:26), Doan (21:44) and Kreuzman (22:21) ran solid times as sophomores.
That group is a year older and wiser – as well as stronger – and Reynolds is hoping that helps make a difference.
“They spent the summer running,” said Reynolds. “Some were on the swim team and between running, swimming and some biking, they came in in good shape. These letter winners have been on the team, and we also have some new people. When they get the experience of running in high school and 5K’s, we’ll see how they fit into the veterans.
“We also have other veterans trying to break into the varsity, so there is competition among teammates. They get along well, but they want to beat each other.”
That competition should be a good thing for the Generals, who open the 2012 campaign at Mapleton August 21.
